Education is a vital component of rebuilding lives in refugee settlements. Recognizing this, development partners are embracing innovative learning solutions to improve educational outcomes for refugee children. One such initiative is the “Can’t Wait to Learn” project, implemented by AWYAD (African Women and Youth Action for Development) and War Child Alliance.
Currently operational in Kyaka 2 Refugee Settlement in Kyegegwa District, Kyangwali in Kikube District, Nakivale and Oruchinga in Isingiro District, and Bidibidi in Yumbe District, the project targets primary one to primary three students. The project focuses on English and Math, with 40-minute sessions for each subject.
According to Mr. Bisanga Ivan Amooti, Project Assistant in Kyaka 2 Refugee Settlement, “The project is learner-friendly and engages students to perform better than those not participating. The use of headsets also promotes listening skills among learners.”
War Child Alliance, HOPELINK FOUNDATION UGANDA, and other NGOs are working closely with the Government of Uganda to implement this project. By providing interactive and engaging learning experiences, “Can’t Wait to Learn” aims to improve educational outcomes for refugee children in Uganda.

The project’s impact is already being felt, with students showing improved academic performance and increased confidence in their learning abilities. As Amooti notes, “This project is a game-changer for refugee education in Uganda.”
We appreciate the efforts of development partners and NGOs working together to provide quality education to refugee children. Together, we can create a brighter future for Uganda’s refugee population.”Ivan noted”
