The Attorney General of Uganda, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, has come out to clarify the government’s position on the recent enhancement of salaries for police lawyers, stating that the move was not carried out in accordance with the law.
Speaking on the matter, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka emphasized that while government acknowledges the important role played by legal officers within the Uganda Police Force, any adjustments to public servants’ remuneration must follow proper legal and administrative procedures.
“The government does not agree with the enhancement of salaries for police lawyers because it was not done according to the law,” the Attorney General said.
His statement follows growing public interest and internal discussions within government departments regarding disparities in salary structures among public service professionals. The Attorney General reiterated the importance of upholding due process, particularly in matters concerning public funds and government payroll.
He called for a review of the procedures followed in implementing the salary increments and urged all relevant institutions to ensure adherence to the established legal frameworks in managing remuneration and benefits within the public service.
This development comes at a time when government is undertaking broader efforts to harmonize salaries across ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in public administration.
