The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, has raised concerns over the low remuneration of security officers in Uganda, noting that many are struggling to make ends meet due to meager earnings and delayed salary payments.

Hon. Ssenyonyi highlighted the plight of these officers, stating that the financial constraints they face not only affect their welfare but also pose a broader challenge to national security and morale within the forces.

“Security officers earn low salaries that they barely get by with their lives,” Hon. Ssenyonyi said. “It becomes another problem when their salaries don’t come in on time.”

His comments come in the wake of ongoing debates around salary enhancements within the public service, particularly for legal professionals in the police force — an issue that has recently drawn criticism from the Attorney General, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, who said the enhancements were not done in accordance with the law.

Hon. Ssenyonyi’s remarks have reignited calls for government to prioritize better pay and timely remuneration for men and women in uniform, who continue to serve the country under difficult conditions.

The discussion also touches on broader concerns over salary disparities and the need for comprehensive reforms in public sector pay structures to ensure equity, motivation, and efficiency across all departments.
