Over 16 Young Mothers Seek Help After Alleged Abandonment by Chinese Fathers

Entebbe, Uganda – More than 16 young Ugandan mothers have turned to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for assistance after being allegedly abandoned by Chinese nationals who fathered their children.

According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, Simon Mundeyi, the men in question were employees of China Communications Company Limited (CCCC), a firm contracted to work on the Entebbe Express Highway—one of Uganda’s most significant infrastructure projects in recent years.

“These women were left behind with children fathered by Chinese workers who have since returned to their country,” Mundeyi told reporters. “The Ministry is engaging relevant stakeholders to establish identities and possible responsibilities of the alleged fathers.”

Many of the mothers claim that they were in long-term relationships with the men, some of whom reportedly made promises of continued support before leaving Uganda. With no contact information and limited legal avenues to pursue child support or recognition, the women are now calling for government intervention.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs says it is coordinating with immigration and foreign affairs officials to trace records of the Chinese workers and explore possible diplomatic or legal frameworks to address the matter.

This incident raises broader concerns about the social impact of large infrastructure projects, especially when foreign labor is heavily involved. Civil society organizations have also called for stronger protections for local women and clearer protocols for companies employing expatriates.

CCCC has not yet issued a statement on the matter.

As investigations continue, the Ministry urges affected individuals to come forward with any documentation or evidence that could assist in identifying the fathers and resolving the situation in the best interests of the children involved.
