Banjul, The Gambia – During a session with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Uganda’s Deputy Attorney General, Hon. Kafuuzi Jackson, responded to concerns surrounding the arrest, detention, and conviction of human rights lawyer, Advocate Eron Kiiza.
While acknowledging the Commission’s view that the actions may have been arbitrary, Hon. Kafuuzi asserted that due legal process was followed in the case.
The Government of Uganda maintains that the process was not arbitrary. His right (Eron Kiiza) to a fair trial was respected, he stated.

He clarified that although the habeas corpus application was initially brought under an incorrect procedure, Kiiza was ultimately granted bail.

Hon. Kafuuzi went on to reaffirm Uganda’s broader commitment to human rights, emphasizing that “the Government of Uganda has demonstrated to the Commission the country’s commitment to uphold and protect the rights of its citizens, as enshrined in Chapter Four of the Constitution.”
