Hon. Kabahenda Flavia Rwabuhoro, the Woman Member of Parliament for Kyegegwa District, has expressed concern over the upcoming Teacher’s Day celebrations on October 5, citing a growing divide between science and art teachers in the district.
The split follows government inaction on the long-standing demand by art teachers for a salary increment, leaving them feeling marginalized compared to their science counterparts.
It is disheartening that our teachers, who dedicate their lives to shaping the future of our children, are now divided. Teacher’s Day should be a celebration of all educators, yet these inequalities are causing unnecessary tension,” Hon. Kabahenda said during a press briefing in Kyegegwa town.

The MP urged the government to address the salary concerns of art teachers promptly, emphasizing that equitable treatment of all teachers is essential for maintaining morale and quality education.
We can not celebrate our educators properly if some feel neglected. I call upon the responsible authorities to respond to the concerns of art teachers so that Teacher’s Day can be a unifying event, not a reminder of disparity, she added.

Education stakeholders in Kyegegwa have echoed her sentiments, warning that the divide could affect collaboration in schools and potentially disrupt classroom performance.
Hon. Kabahenda also encouraged local communities to recognize the efforts of all teachers, regardless of their specialty, and to use Teacher’s Day as an opportunity to show appreciation for the contributions of every educator.
Teachers are the backbone of our society. Whether they teach science, arts, or any other discipline, their work deserves respect and recognition, she concluded.
As Teacher’s Day approaches, attention now turns to whether the government will act to bridge the gap and ensure that celebrations are inclusive and representative of all teachers across Uganda.
