Prominent human rights activist Sarah Bireete has been released on bail, bringing temporary relief to her supporters and the wider civil society community following her recent detention.
According to court directives, Bireete was granted bail under strict conditions, including an order not to leave Uganda without prior permission from the court. The restriction is intended to ensure her availability as legal proceedings continue.
Bireete’s arrest had drawn significant public attention, with activists, lawyers, and human rights defenders calling for her release and emphasizing the importance of constitutional freedoms, due process, and the rule of law. Her case reignited national debate on civic space, activism, and the treatment of human rights defenders in Uganda.

Upon her release, supporters described the development as a step forward, though they noted that the legal process is still ongoing. They reiterated calls for respect for fundamental rights and fair treatment of all citizens, regardless of their political or civic engagement.
The court is expected to give further direction on the matter when the case returns for hearing. Until then, Bireete remains bound by the bail conditions set by the court.
