Residents of Rwampara District are celebrating a major milestone after the government formally issued more than 2,000 land titles, granting families legal ownership and security over the land they have occupied for years.

A total of 2,120 freehold titles were distributed to beneficiaries from six villages in Ruhandagazi Parish, Bugamba Sub-county, in an exercise spearheaded by the Uganda Lands Commission. The handover event was also attended by members of Parliament’s lands committee, underscoring the national importance of the initiative.

Representing Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba, Ms Norah Bigyirwa, hailed the exercise as transformative, saying it empowers communities with full ownership rights and long-term security

This is a life-changing moment for many families. Legal ownership gives you confidence to develop your land and plan for future generations, she said.

Officials cautioned beneficiaries to carefully protect their land titles and avoid risky financial decisions, particularly using them as collateral for loans that could result in land loss.

Andrew Mumba, Secretary of the Commission, emphasized that formal land ownership is a key tool in fighting land grabbing and unlocking economic potential.

Local leaders welcomed the development, describing it as a turning point in resolving long-standing land disputes in the area. Community representatives said the intervention has helped ease tensions that previously existed between residents and traditional institutions, including the Ankole Kingdom.

Bugamba Sub-county Chairperson Richard Nsiliba urged recipients to put their land to productive use, particularly in agriculture, and encouraged others to begin the process of securing legal ownership.

The government continues to implement the Land Fund program to address historical land injustices across the country, a move that has already benefited thousands of lawful occupants.

With secure land tenure now in place, residents in Rwampara are expected to increase investment in agriculture and other income-generating activities, paving the way for improved livelihoods and sustainable development.
