Kyegegwa District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Kabahenda Flavia Rwabuhoro, has called for the enactment of a district ordinance to promote rainwater harvesting in a bid to address persistent water shortages in communities.

Speaking during a church function at Karwenyi Church of Uganda in Kyaka South, Hon. Kabahenda urged local leaders and authorities to adopt legislation that would mandate the installation of water harvesting systems, such as tanks, in all public buildings and facilities at the construction stage.

We must make water harvesting a legal requirement for all public infrastructure. This is not just an environmental issue; it’s a matter of survival and dignity for our people, Hon. Kabahenda stated.

She emphasized that the initiative would ease the pressure on public water sources and improve household access to clean water, especially during dry seasons.

The event was presided over by Rt. Rev. Bishop Reuben Kisembo and marked the reinstatement of Rev. Ven. Erick Atwooki as Archdeacon of the newly established Karwenyi Archdeaconry.

During her remarks, Hon. Kabahenda also linked food insecurity to domestic violence and broader economic challenges facing rural families.

Food poverty is fueling conflict in homes and hindering our progress as a district. We must make food security a priority at household and community levels, she added.

She called on families, church leaders, and local councils to work together to strengthen food production and reduce dependence on external aid.

The MP’s proposals were met with applause from community members and clergy, who echoed the need for sustainable solutions to the region’s development challenges.
