Parliament of Uganda – The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, has issued a strong call for urgent and coordinated action to address the alarming rise in road accidents across Uganda, following a tragic motor accident in Kigorobya, Buliisa District, that claimed the lives of 20 traders and left several others injured on Tuesday evening.
Delivering her communication to Parliament this afternoon, the Speaker expressed deep sorrow over the incident and called for immediate government intervention to ensure safer roads and improved transport systems.
What happened in Buliisa is heartbreaking. Twenty lives breadwinners, mothers, and fathers are gone in an instant. This is not just a statistic; these are Ugandans whose lives mattered,” said Speaker Among. “We must act now to prevent such tragedies from continuing to occur on our roads

Citing alarming national data, the Speaker revealed that over 25,000 road crashes were recorded in Uganda in the past year alone—figures that she said point to a growing crisis that demands urgent attention from both government and society.
These figures are not just numbers they are a national alarm. We can not continue business as usual while lives are being lost daily due to avoidable road crashes,” she added.

The Speaker urged all stakeholders—including the Ministry of Works and Transport, Uganda Police, and local governments, to take collective responsibility and strengthen efforts to promote road safety, enforce traffic laws, and upgrade road infrastructure.
She also called on Parliament to ensure adequate budgetary allocations toward road safety initiatives and infrastructure development, particularly in rural areas that are often neglected.
In a related appeal, the speaker extended a caution to school owners and administrators across the country, stressing the need to prioritize students on road safety
Our children’s safety should never be compromised. Schools must implement safety protocols and ensure that every student is protected while in their care, she urged.

Speaker Among’s address drew widespread attention and reflection in the House, with several MPs echoing her sentiments and pledging to support initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety and infrastructure development.
As Uganda continues to grapple with road-related tragedies, the Speaker’s remarks serve as a wake-up call to leaders and institutions at all levels to take meaningful steps toward building a safer, more secure future for all Ugandans.
