Gov’t Moves to Support Community and NGO Schools with Shs58.1 Billion Boost

In a bid to expand access to education across the country, the Ministry of Education and Sports has received several requests to take over community and NGO-founded schools and transform them into government-aided institutions.

The move targets underserved areas—specifically parishes without primary schools and sub-counties lacking secondary schools—where such institutions have been playing a critical role in providing education to children with limited alternatives.

To support this initiative, Members of Parliament have recommended the allocation of Shs58.1 billion in the upcoming budget. The funds would be used to grant aid 300 primary schools and 56 secondary schools currently operating under community or non-governmental management.

Grant aiding typically involves government support in terms of teacher salaries, infrastructure development, learning materials, and administrative assistance—helping to relieve the burden on local communities and improve the quality of education provided.

This recommendation comes at a time when access to affordable, quality education remains a national priority. If approved, the initiative could significantly improve learning outcomes and reduce the number of children who must travel long distances to attend school.

The Ministry of Education is expected to carry out assessments to determine the eligibility and readiness of the proposed schools for integration into the public system.
